The History of the WHA
A look at our history
The World Hockey Association formed around February 2001 with the intentions of great sucess. At the time the WHA had started out with only eight franchises and only half a season was played. Though a short season, it was a season of many accomplishments. The first AVCO Cup champions were the Minnesota North Stars defeating the rival Minnesota Mighty Ducks in six games. In 2002, the WHA expanded into markets such as Norfolk, Virgnia and Houston, Texas. In 2003, the Richmond Renegades would win their second AVCO Cup championship in two years defeating the Winnipeg Jets in four games. In 2004, the WHA would expand it's horizons and enter into the international scene with franchises in St. Petersburg, Russia, Hamburg, Germany, Finland, and Prague, Czech Republic. In 2005, the WHA would have it's most successful season by far. Many records were set in this season and many underdogs would emerge from the bottom feeders in the World Hockey Association. In 2005, the Quebec Nordiques would win their first AVCO Cup championship over the Minnesota Mighty Ducks in six games. 2006 looks to be a promising year of hockey and it should be exciting to see what may be in store.
